AMELIE HOUSING KATOOMBA
Amelie Housing, a department of St Vincent de Paul commissioned Melocco & Moore as Head Consultant to design and document an affordable housing project on vacant land behind and adjacent to their store in the Katoomba Commercial District. The land is varied in slope and plan creating challenges and opportunities to realise the brief to build 26 one and two bedroom apartments.
Our approach was to divide the building into two separate blocks, creating a fine grain building mass with opportunities for integrated open space and good solar access complying with the Australian Housing Design Guideline. The project required integration with the existing heritage streetscape of Lurline Street which is benchmarked by numerous federation style guesthouses and careful consideration of the aims of the heritage conservation area.
This project was completed in March 2020. It has been part funded under the NSW Government Social and Affordable Housing Fund.
