CORPORATION BUILDING
City of Sydney commissioned Melocco & Moore to create a retail and community arts facility within the historic Corporation Building located in Haymarket’s Chinatown precinct.
The refurbishment and adaptive reuse of the Corporation Building required a sensitive and innovative approach. Originally designed by George McCrae, architect of the QVB, the Corporation Building is one of the city’s most important examples of Queen Anne commercial architecture.
Historic retail outlets were maintained in their original location to face the street and the Asia-Australia Arts Centre was added to the first floor. The successful blending of old and new provided a new life to the now bustling community and cultural centre.
