REDFERN – SEMI-DETACHED DWELLINGS

Our client purchased four semi-detached houses on a corner site in Redfern. Each existing dwelling consisted of two bedrooms, a living space in the centre of the plan and kitchen and bathrooms to the rear. The original layout, blocking all real access to the backyards, all needed repair. The client brief was to expand each dwelling from two to three bedrooms, expand the bathroom facilities, create an open plan living/dining kitchen space and open the living spaces to a newly landscaped back yard.

Melocco and Moore have created a series of three-bedroom homes with the bathrooms moved to the centre of the plan allowing a new light filled living space to flow directing onto private outdoor entertaining areas.

The backyards have been reimaged as a series of terraced spaces, formed by new retaining walls constructed using recycled bricks from the demolition of the old rear structures. These new retaining walls act as seating options and planter boxes defining lower paved dining courtyard and upper courtyard for grassed outdoor lounge spaces.

The living spaces are cleverly planned using custom cabinetry to combine kitchen, dining and living spaces. The three zones are linked using one long joinery unit that is both kitchen bench, living room seat and TV unit.

The result is four wonderfully renovated heritage semis in Redfern, adding improved stock to the rental market in the inner city for the next generation.
